The Central Pacific Railroad Photographic History Museum is a great source of railway images. The exhibits include a range of stereographs, some of which have been rendered in 3D effect for the web. There are stereographs of the Railroad's construction (1864-1869) and a selection of Eadweard Muybridge's stereoviews from the 1870s. My favourite images, though, are contained in the Jeffrey Kraus Collection. I particularly like the one of the Chinese railroad workers, which I think really captures just how hard the work of railroad building was.
